Why Small Businesses Need GEO, Not Just SEO
For twenty years, “get found online” meant one thing: rank on Google. That’s no longer the whole picture. A growing share of buying research now happens inside AI answer engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google’s own AI Overviews — before a searcher ever clicks a blue link.
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of making your site easy for those systems to read, quote, and cite. It shares a foundation with SEO — clean structure, fast pages, real expertise — but adds a few specific requirements:
- Answer the question directly, near the top of the page, in plain sentences an LLM can lift as a quote.
- Use structured data (JSON-LD) so machines don’t have to guess what a page is about.
- Publish an

None of this replaces good SEO. It sits on top of it. A small business that does both well shows up whether the customer types into a search bar or asks an assistant a question out loud.
